Calendula Cavendish

A little while ago I scribbled out a little character. Lately I've been taking this imaginary subject as sort of a mental template for dedicated practice; basically if I can't think of anything to draw or need to warm up, I'll draw her to test things out.

Castlevania Nocturne Frozen Shade: Lighting and Painterly Study

Vive la Revolution

One of my goals for the longest time was to actually finish my artwork. For various reasons I'venever quite been satisfied with my approach and workflow. What a strange thing, then, that a show I only kind of liked would be my muse for a few days.

Castlevania Nocturne Frozen Shade

Hello world, it's been a while.

This year one of my goals has been to take a concentarted effort to try and refine my craft, put stuff out there, try and get noticed, and who knows, maybe get paid for this.

For the last three weeks since the start of the new year, I've been attempting to grind and level up as best as I can, which more often than not is a slow process that starts with finding a first push of momentum. About five to ten minutes of dragging my pen over the tablet seems to do the trick...until I run out of steam, unable to decide what to draw.

I caught up on Castlevania: Nocturne on Netflix over the weekend to try and jostle something into inspiration. I found myself morbid captivated by this minor character, the nameless Captain of the French Revolutionary Guard who was turned into a night creature as a nod to one of the video game enemies, the Frozen Shade. The horror of her second unlife juxtaposed well with the series' themes of elevating oneself over oppression.

It's not a bad show, but to call it an adaptation of Rondo of Blood is to really stretch the meaning of the word. For what it was I enjoyed it overall, and from an aesthetic point of view, Castlevania has always been visually interesting.

As an artist, I found that while I still enjoy drawing figures and sketching, my inking is rudimentary and I'm still no painter. I'd like to improve my skills as a colorist, and referencing stills form the show gave me something to study.

Calendula

Been out of practice. Trying to draw upon something within me to make a more honest core of my artwork, and with that, a more productive process.

So of couse this starts with a bikini babe.

Nah, NO Write November

Well that didn't go very well. I suppose the issue may be a matter of refining the process. As in, making time for it. As I grow older, I find energy and focus is more unsteady. It's likely a result of a sort of jadedness, catalyzing a laziness that is easy to claim as efficiency. But frankly, if you're only doing enough, the bare minimum, it becomes really hard to grow. Been noodling what I can do to do it...and all I can do, is try a bit harder. Pain in the ass, but them's the breaks.

NaNoWriMo 2023 Week 1

Been a long time since I used this blog, may as well dust it off.

Following some internet friends from parts elsewhere, this November I'm going to attempt to go through the designated modules of this National Novel Writing Month outline, the theory being that structure might help to nail down something coherent, and deadlines induce productivity. It had been the case with Inktober, but this is a different medium entirely, and while words are in some cases freeing, they are also more abstract in conveyance.

Anywho as Gertrude said before Polonius got stabbed in the curtains, more matter, and less art. Let's chronicle the process.

Week 1: Sparking an Idea

Following the rubric linked in the site above, I followed the prompts pretty much to the letter as below.

1) Make a List of Places and Things That Make You Feel Excited, Inspired, or Curious

Right off the bad I may have constrained myself in needing to answer something, and so in response to what I interpreted as the question "What is this story about," I heard rumblings of old college classes echoing in my thoughts. The answer to this question can be broken down in a few ways and I found myself wanting, depending on how I'd interpreted the question.

1) What happens in this story?

As the story has not been written, inspiration is fickle, and I try not to get too excited about things, I couldn't formulate any neat one-word answers to this, only rambling. However, curiosity, there's a great many things I'd considered in, at the risk of sounding pretentious, the high-concept stuff.

2) What do you want to say?

There are a great many things I feel strongly about, yet I wouldn't feel quite right about making this story an author's moral tract. The concerns for the issues of the moment have a way of forcing stories into allegory or dating them immediately, which while useful when there's a point to be made, I don't have a soapbox to stand on right now, so let's just try to have fun.

3) What are the themes of this story?

Back to the high-concept stuff, painting a swathe of ideas with the broadest brush would at least get me a start. And so I present...

My craptacular list:

Wishes, fantasy, illusion, delusion, perception, magic, faith, belief, pathos, collective consciousness, inner psychology, manifestation, schema, projecting root concepts, sublimation defense mechanisms, denial, will, reason, dynamic interplay between self and world, blending inner and outer conflict, assertion of the ego, validation of the self, dreams into nightmares, semiotics (performance) of the self as defined by the contexts/constraints (conformity) of the world

2) Circle Nine Things You'd be Excited to Include in Your Novel

Following the rubric, I played mad libs with craptacular list to try and sting together a sense of what I wanted to write about.

Novel Idea 1:

Performance of the self as defined by context of the world...

...used as a defense mechanism...

...to make dreams into nightmares

Novel Idea 2:

Assertion of the ego...

...into the delusion...

...of fantasy

Novel Idea 3:

Manifestation of the collective consciousness…

...in an interplay between self and the world...

...but in the denial of reason validating will.

Within the sea of pretentious, suface level Psych/Phil dual-minor stuff, at the moment i think Idea 3 might have some legs.

3) Pick One of the Novel Ideas and Freewrite to Explore the Idea

As a bit of a slacker, I've done a great deal of 'prewriting' before. The average person calls this process 'daydreaming', but among friends who also are 'guys with a story'

So I ran a track from the Tekken 7 OST and started chickenpecking until a germ of an idea came around.

“Dreams come true” is a broad idea, and realizing it in reality, manifesting it, is commonly used to get the ball rolling on the path there. As the cliché goes, it is the journey, not the destination, that offer fulfillment and meaning.

All too human is the need for instant gratification. Whether it is a fulfillment of a momentary whim or to turn the tide on terrible fortunes, the ability to manifest will into reality is a boon. With an ego untempered by the journey, with urges lashing out to destroy to spite creation, this would cause a horrible imbalance.

Gary was once a poor unfortunate soul who by chance, fate had conspired to grant him the powers to realize his dreams on a whim. All he would need to do is will it, and so would it be, the power of all things with but a mere thought. However, because he has a small imagination, many urges unfulfilled without outlets, what started as trepidation and uncertainty with the power of manifestation gradually turns into solipsism that leaves him more isolated than before. Who could be lonelier than a god caged off in his own heaven?

So far this sounds like something you'd read off the back of a video cover. I gotta sell myself on it though or it may very well be that the blogs will drive most of the writing this month, we shall see.

Comics on WordPress!

I've finally made some headway in my comic hosting struggle, because I'm bad at the internet.

Anyways, for now, you can read Archaepelago in its entirety with clicky buttons and such instead of sifting through a gallery

Check it!

Comic Update: Archepelago Preview

Yeah, been away for a little while, but not without a purpose!

Apart from a couple of conventions (names Tsukinocon and Anime Evolution J-Fest), I've been working on a comic zine. It's something of a childish pulp adventure story taking place in a sort of subtropic oceanic area I've title Archaepelago.  The reason for this portmanteau shall become clearer as we go on.

She's a most refined lady, and this is just getting started XD

Comicking on Boards! Weeklies on Hiatus!

AHHHHHHHH
Taking a break from the weeklies to concentrate on hashing out this little story.

Well, story is kind of loose, this is more of a goofy adventure about nothing.

Expect some updates on this project soon!

Tsukino-Con 2014

Hamon!

I just came back from Tsukino-Con at the University of Victoria on Vancouver Island. I gotta say, I was pleasantly surprised that under a rather unassuming venue, there was a group of folks subsisting on good will and hype.  It was also nice to explore a different scene, close enough but all the same different from the Vancouver crowd.

Heichou got no sleep
At my table I was doing the usual illustrating, even got a few commissions. Before they disappeared, I snapped a few pictures.

Unfortunately I could only do pencils, since I brought my inks but no white or correctional tape!

All in all, a good first run in the con circuit. All fired up to get some more stuff done, but first I gotta stretch the hands and make some time.

2014 Weeklies 4

Mosasaurus loves crab
Nothing much to say here.

I hate drawing long hair.

2014 Weeklies 3

Mosasaurus Pitfall!
Still working on action and stuff, drawing inspiration from the pulpy classics.

I can't draw water worth a damn. In colour, it's as simple as tweaking values on the surface with transparencies (I'm underselling it, it's a value puzzle), but in b/w monochrome ink, it's kinda rough.

Swing on, kiddo.

2014 Weeklies 2

Allosaurus Chase!
Still trying to iron out a proof of concept for my comic project. Hopefully I will have something more substantial than an idea soon.

This is basically a plot summary. Girl in jungle runs afoul of an allosaurus, hijinks ensue!

I'm having an issue with conveying motion. Why do George Morikawa, Yukito Kishiro and Paul Pelletier gotta be such a high benchmark, man... but I'm slowly getting the hang of it I think!

2014 Weeklies 1

It's a new year. I'm going to try again to push my skills to the limit; in drawing I find I only improve as I make myself force it. So look forward to a lot of dumb stuff on the weekend from here on out!
OM NOM NOM
I had a craving for spot prawns...which at the time of posting has yet to be sated -_-;

This is a character I'm going to be doing some work on as she's relatively easy to draw and has been stewing in my brain for a little while for a comic project. More as this develops

(OK, let's try this again) Number 11

Been a while, so here's a quickie.
Ambiguously brown?
This is mostly playing around with screen tones. I find that flat shading lacks a 'comicky' feeling to it so I hope to incorporate this into more of my work.

First piece of digital work in a while, I got a long ways to go. Join me on my journey to not sucking so hard!

Number 10

Holy crap have I been slacking off. Got no excuses really, just can't seem to get motivated. I think maybe I'll try a weekly schedule, it'll force me to try and finish up old sketches.

Under the sea!

I come up with the dumbest stuff when I'm tired. I think this has some potential for wacky adventures.

Gotta work on those speedlines; subjective motion has been a nut I've been trying to crack for years now.

Day 9

Parents just don't understand
I'm pretty terrible at drawing kids unless they're being petulant.

Other than that, I admit I've been slacking. Life's frustrations (vis-a-vis night school here) stymie efforts; art requires a certain clarity, a lucid state of mind.

Feh.

Day 8

Shaolin Quan!

Conveying kinetic energy has been something I've been trying to work at for a while. I can't quite get the feel of subjective motion quite right. George Morikawa's Hajime no Ippo is where I set my personal barometer, so I have a long way to go. I really want to create a comic with rad fight scenes, but need the skill and grit to do it.

Also time.
